Is honey good for your skin?

Yes! Honey is a wonderful skincare ingredient. It’s known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties and, as such, has been used on skin for centuries.

Honey can be used by most people and is especially suited to sensitive skin and dry skin. However, make sure you do a patch test before kickstarting your journey into honey-infused skincare – just in case.

  • Healing properties – Honey is naturally antibacterial and speeds up your skin cells' healing processes – so it’s great for wounds.

  • Anti-aging – Honey is an antioxidant and blocks free radicals to help maintain a youthful looking complexion.

  • Moisturising – Honey absorbs moisture from the air and locks it into your skin, so is great during winter months or if you’re experiencing uncomfortable dry skin.

Does it matter what kind of honey you use?

If you’re making homemade skin treatments or using honey straight from the jar, we recommend using an unpasteurised honey, like Manuka honey. That way, you’ll get all the benefits.

So when you’re at the shops, keep an eye out for Manuka honey or ‘raw’ honey.

What does honey do for your skin?

People have been tapping into the healing properties and benefits of using honey for centuries. That’s because it’s packed full of completely natural antibacterial components. So, if you have blemishes or an eczema outbreak, honey can help speed healing and reduce inflammation.

It’s also an amazingly potent moisturising ingredient and is often used to rehydrate skin and fade scars. So if you’re craving a flawless complexion, why not dip into your store cupboard for a little boost? Carry on reading for a lovely (and simple) homemade moisture mask.

Softens dry skin

Honey is a natural humectant – that means it pulls in moisture and locks it into the skin. It also creates a protective barrier to prevent dryness. Plus, the enzymes in honey help exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells to soften rough skin.

Treats acne breakouts

If you’re experiencing a breakout, a honey-infused treatment can work wonders. You’ll find a range of cleansers and moisturisers that draw on the healing properties of honey to calm breakouts and protect the skin.
